Lyrics / Prompt

Like so many times before
Put the peddle to the floor
Another gig in the pouring rain
Flashing lights up ahead
But onward they sped
To be on time they had to beat the train
The last note that they heard
Was the train whistle’s dirge
Warning as it barreled down the track
When the old car stalled
Their numbers were called
Too late, much too late to turn back
At the bluegrass bash
The dancers heard the crash
Mangled metal grinding on the rail
In shock and with a shout
They all came rushing out
But no survivors lived to tell the tale
The last note that they heard
Was the train whistle’s dirge
Warning as it barreled down the track
When the old car stalled
Their numbers were called
Too late, much too late to turn back
On a dark and dreary night
When an engine takes its flight
Roaring through that somber heartland
Shrieking echoes through the gloom
Play a haunting tune
And mourn the loss of the bluegrass band
The last note that they heard
Was the train whistle’s dirge
Warning as it barreled down the track
When the old car stalled
Their numbers were called
Too late, much too late to turn back
